Logistics Partners For Cell and Gene Therapies

Cell and Gene therapies have been around for quite some time now but with the market expanding rapidly around the world one question is becoming more and more common.

How do I ship my cell and gene therapies successfully?

The treatment of genetic disease through gene therapies is rapidly becoming a clinical reality the same can also be said for stem cell therapies. Researchers and scientists have plenty of hoops to jump through already - issues with regulatory approval and developing a commercially viable product come with many new challenges as the industry begins to expand and grow.

For any therapy to be a success they must arrive on-time, in good condition and at the same temperature they left the collection site with the critical element of cell viability against time of transport always in play.

At a recent conference Steve Taylor, Key Account Director for Biocair was asked ‘Why should customers trust Biocair to ship their cell and gene therapies?’

‘Biocair have been around for a long time and started when scientists really didn’t know a great deal about shipping their research and development material, at this time Biocair took this headache away and from producing the paperwork to finding the correct packaging through to making sure the shipment was delivered at the other end in good condition it’s something we’ve been perfecting for many years. This is something Biocair have always done and I guess have carried on with this ‘white glove’ approach.

Now though this Biocair style of approach has become even more critical when dealing with cell and gene work. What we have found as time has progressed in this area is that our customers requirements are somewhat more critical due to the nature of what they are shipping.

‘What do you find the biggest issues your customers face shipping cell and gene therapies?’

‘The pain points for our customers can be many and various but some of the most obvious are the time sensitive nature of the shipments, dealing with various regulations when shipping internationally and maintaining the correct temperature regimen from lab to patient’.

‘How is this overcome?’

‘I would say for us by far the most important thing is the collaboration with the client. If we work hard at the front end to design a reliable solution it means there is much less likely to be a problem when shipments go live. Sometimes the devil is in the detail, some of the simplest things that the customer had never even thought of can make a difference and may even end up with a completely different logistics design to the one that was initially anticipated.

Our customers are the ones that push us all the time, we’ve got shipments that need unpacking in minutes at the delivery point to some that have a viability of just four hours! In these cases, a lot of work is necessary to validate every step of the process in close consultation with the customer.

‘So where do you see the future?’

‘I think the truly exciting thing from a clinical perspective is that these therapies are looking to cure rather than just treat patients, even on an individual patient to patient basis.

From a professional industry stand point it is of course impossible to predict which way things will develop, but we are already seeing changes in the logistics landscape. I think its also safe to say that regulation will only be increased rather than relaxed and that’s something that we at Biocair must constantly try and stay in front of.

We are already finding that we need to develop very customer focused and individual solutions, there is rarely a one-size fits all, very often diverse types of transport, different temperature monitors, different packaging, different routing is required to a job we thought was very like the last one, it can all be very bespoke.’
