World Health Organisation Increases Pandemic Alert to Level 5
Following a meeting of the WHO Emergency Committee on 29th April the Director General raised the Pandemic Alert from 4 to 5.
30 April 2009
The World Health Organisation Committee met on 29th April and took data on confirmed outbreaks of ‘Swine Influenza’ in the USA, Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Germany, Israel and Austria. As of 18:00 GMT nine countries had officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza H1/N1 infection.

On the advice of the committee the Director General raised the alert level to Level 5. At this level the World Health Organisation is communicating that all countries should enable their Pandemic Preparedness plans.

At this alert level the WHO still do not recommend restricting international travel as this is unproven in the reduction of the spread of the disease.

At this Alert Level, Biocair have begun working with our Customers to ensure that we are assisting in their Business Continuity Planning response to the potential pandemic. This covers a broad range of services including

• Logistical design for studies and single shipments returning patient specimens to laboratories for analysis
• Immediate response to dispatch finished product to markets where vaccines are required in controlled temperature conditions
• Involvement and assistance with the preparedness to move entire laboratories and sites in event of a future pandemic that requires sites to be closed.

Biocair provide logistical support to major international and local University spin out companies in both end product distribution and the transport of bio-hazardous material in the Research and Development stages of vaccine production. Please contact one of our global offices to discuss any challenges that you may have. There is also a case study available for your perusal that demonstrates some of our pandemic logistical capabilities. Please check the Case Study section of this website.
